capstone structure means you are doing genuine historical research, not responding to set questions. the research project is open-ended which is either motivating or overwhelming depending on how comfortable you are with independent scholarly work

no clearly defined weekly learning outcomes which makes it hard to know what you are building toward. the essay marking expects a level of historiographical sophistication that surprises students who have not done upper-level history before

rewards students who are genuinely interested in history as a discipline. if you are doing it purely as a capstone requirement the open research format will feel like a slog without real intellectual investment
